US steps up crackdown on Chinese exports of flat-rolled aluminium products
Report summary
On 28 November, the US Department of Commerce (DOC) announced its preliminary decision to impose anti-dumping duties on aluminium common alloy sheet imports from China. The proposed 56.54% to 59.72% level of duties on aluminium sheet will effectively make all imports from China uncompetitive. This investigation is separate to the one against imports of aluminium foil which the DOC upheld a preliminary decision to impose duties in late October. We estimate that the ban on Chinese imports of sheet and foil will translate into 600 ktpa of additional demand from ROW smelters, which is equivalent to 2.2% of expected 2017 primary production outside China on the all-primary basis.
