Report summary

Vale New Caledonia (VNC) has been plagued by capital cost over runs, start up delays and operations issues since commencing production in 2011. Initial capital costs were put at US$1.4 billion, although final costs were closer to +US$6 billion. Vale has faced many challenges in getting the operation anywhere near its nameplate capacity of 60kt Ni/a and reducing operating costs. Vale stated that 2016 was a key year for VNC in terms of evaluating its performance in the long term and was expected to make a decision on the operation's future by the end of the year.
