Ducks fly south for spring: Solar’s presence in Mexico now a reality
Report summary
Pipes and panels portend plunging power prices? After two years of dwindling operating reserves and energy price blowouts, changes are afoot in Mexico’s Sistema Interconectado Nacional (SIN) power market. Since the launch of the day-ahead market in 2016, we have been watching a three-way race between the construction of new lower cost generation, construction of new pipelines to deliver low cost US gas, and the terminal decline of Mexico’s legacy domestic natural gas production gradually taking away critical fuel inputs for power generation. In this insight we explore the fundamentals that now seem to change on a daily basis, highlighting the integrated effects between gas, power, and renewable infrastructure on locational pricing.
