As the renewable share of European electricity grows, the role of gas will change and adapt as the overall balance of supply is reshaped by losses of coal and, in the longer term, nuclear. New-build nuclear will fail to offset the closure of ageing reactors in Europe. While competitive wind and solar will deliver EU 2020 and 2030 renewable power targets, national policy makers are moving to address the challenge of sustaining – or indeed accelerating – the progress of emissions reduction.
