New government to accelerate Spain's energy transition
This report is currently unavailable
Report summary
Spain's new government has announced its intention to become one of Europe’s renewable energy leaders, with plans to accelerate the country's energy transition. To meet the new goals, an energy transition law is expected to be produced later this year. The plans include a proposal to phase out coal in power generation by 2025. The phase out is intended to support the achievement of emissions targets and cut reliance on imported coal. But the announcement has raised opposition, particularly in the coal-producing northern regions. Spain currently has some 9.4 GW of operational coal-fired capacity; before the recent announcement Wood Mackenzie's view was a progressive phase out to 2030.
