SMUD’s building electrification strategy: A grid edge case study

The case study explores the unique approach that Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has adopted to electrify and decarbonize existing and new buildings in its service area, highlighting the takeaways this strategy offers to power and natural gas distributors, as well as regulators and technology providers, in the US and abroad. The case study also compares SMUD’s experience with the most important building electrification initiatives currently in progress in California, New York and New England, and provides insights on the status of and outlook for the heat pump technology sector.
