A landlocked country situated in the Alpine region at the heart of Central Europe, Austria is rich in mineral deposits and is one of the wealthiest countries in Europe in terms of GDP per capita. The country is a net importer of oil products, mostly from its neighbour Germany. The overall demand for oil products has stabilised at around 12.8 Mt a year, but we expect a gradual decline over the longer-term as the economy matures and vehicle engines become more fuel-efficient. OMV owns the country's only refinery, Schwechat, which sells around 70% of its output on the domestic market. The fuels marketing segment is dominated by international oil companies, although OMV remains the main player with almost a third of the market share.
