A landlocked country situated in the Alpine region at the heart of Central Europe, Austria is one of the wealthiest countries in Europe in terms of GDP per capita. The country is a net importer of oil products, mostly sourced from neighbouring Germany. Although demand for transport fuel has increased for the past five consecutive years, we expect a gradual decline over the longer term as the economy matures and vehicle engines become more fuel-efficient. OMV operates the country's only crude oil refinery, Schwechat, which sells around 70% of its output on the domestic market. In the retail fuel sector, market leader BP has been rationalising its network, whereas rising independent players continue to growing their market share, leveraging the high-volume automated service station format.
