Total has restructured its downstream business by combining refining with chemicals, placing large integrated sites at the centre of its strategy. However, the company's still heavily exposed to weak market conditions in Europe and there is limited upside to the chemicals business which lags behind its peers in terms of profitability. On the other hand, Total's marketing segment showed strong performance in 2013 making the company's overall downstream ROCE one of the highest among the majors.
