Report summary

At the end of September, the Thai owned Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) confirmed the closure of the Teesside slab plant purchased from Tata Steel in 2011. In October Tata Steel confirmed the mothballing of its UK plate production with direct impact on Scunthorpe, Dalzell and Clydebridge facilities. This follows the end of talks on the potential sale of the long product division to Klesch Group earlier this summer. In this inform we address the reasons and implications of these developments.
