Report summary

The Austin Chalk is a mature play that continues to go through stages of revitalisation with the implementation of new drilling and completions technology. Activity in the chalk has been cyclical, rising with new advancements in technology and falling off with significant drops in commodity prices. Most recently, activity has been reinvigorated through the application of horizontal drilling and advances in 3D seismic and drill bit steering technology.

      • Located in Texas on the Gulf Coast, the Austin Chalk is able to take advantage of its proximity to refineries in Corpus Christi and Houston. The short distance to the Gulf Coast refineries reduces costs and allows for more transport options. Barges are available to transport on the intracoastal waterways in addition to pipelines, rail, and trucks. In spite of these advantages, the Austin Chalk does face challenges as a result of the volume of crude, condensate and NGLs that require processing in the Gulf Coast refineries. No new refineries have been built in the US since 1976 and since then expansions and upgrades have been primarily geared towards running lower quality crudes, such as Mexican Maya and heavy Venezuelan grades.
