The Marcellus Shale, located primarily in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York, is currently the dominant shale gas play in the US Lower 48 in terms of production.  The Marcellus consists of two main play areas:  a dry gas core in northeast Pennsylvania where, on average, wells are most productive, and a southwest core that yields smaller wells but produces a rich gas stream.
