Poland Carboniferous shale gas unconventional concept play
Report summary
The Polish Carboniferous shale gas play in southwest Poland lies in a major conventional gas-producing region. The shale is also the source rock for the prolific Permian Rotliegend sandstone play that runs from the Netherlands, across Germany and into Poland. Exploration has historically been dominated by state-owned PGNiG and IOC San Leon Energy, but in 2017 both companies had relinquished their interest in all operated licences. Ansila Energy (formerly Pura Vida Energy) is currently the only company actively exploring the basin. Having acquired the Gora licence (previously owned by San Leon Energy) from Gemini Resources in 2019, Ansila Energy plans to undertake a work program in 2019/2020 aimed at understanding the commerciality of the play.
