In 2013, Sub Sahara Africa boasted six of the top eight discoveries in the world. 122  E&A wells were, with an exploration success rate of 45%, and an average discovery size of 96 million boe. Liquids production across the region increased 6.3% to 5.6 million b/d in 2013, gas output was up just 2% to 5.7 bcfd.  Commercial liquids reserves were up 0.2% compared to the end of 2012, gas reserves increased 23%, primarily because of the large discoveries in the Rovuma Basin.
