The shallow water Abu Qir fields are located 40 kilometres northeast of Alexandria in the Nile Delta. The area consists of three gas/condensate fields: Abu Qir, North Abu Qir, and West Abu Qir. The Western Desert Operating Company (Wepco) joint venture, operated by ConocoPhillips, discovered Abu Qir in 1969 and brought it onstream in 1979.
