Deepwater Block 16 is operated by Maersk Oil & Gas in the Lower Congo Basin. Since becoming operator Maersk has made three oil discoveries: Chissonga in 2009 followed by Caporolo and Cubal. The block was originally licensed to Shell. However it relinquished the asset in 1999 after drilling eight non commercial exploration wells.The proposed Block 16 development would include the Chissonga and Cubal fields.
