Sangu is the first privately operated gas field brought onstream in Bangladesh, and the only producing offshore asset in the country. Following steep production decline from the main Sangu reservoir in 2006, the operator, Cairn Energy, downgraded reserves. Despite successful well interventions, production ceased in late-2013. Gas was sold directly to the Bangladesh power development board. This was the first instance where an IOC had been allowed to market gas directly to buyers in the country.
