CI-103 is an ultra deepwater block over 50 kilometres south of Abidjan. In 2012, the Paon-1X exploration well encountered oil. The well was considered a deepwater play-opener in Cote d'Ivoire, which had not seen any successful wells targeting the same play as Jubilee in Ghana. Paon-1X encountered good quality oil in Cretaceous turbidites thus extending the Jubilee play and de-risking the basin in Côte d'Ivoire. Two follow-up wells in 2013 were disappointing. The Calao-1X exploration well encountered only gas and condensate shows and a down-dip appraisal of Paon was water-bearing. The field's hydrocarbon column is also considered to be gas rich, therefore we expect further liquids would need to be proved in order to sustain a commercial development. Two subsequent appraisals were more encouraging and a further appraisal well is planned for 2016. A cluster development had been identified as the most likely option for commercial development, but sufficient liquids need to be proved.
