Report summary

CI 103 is an ultra deepwater block over 50 kilometres south of Abidjan. In 2012 the Paon 1X exploration well encountered oil. The well was considered a deepwater play opener in Cote d'Ivoire which had not seen any successful wells targeting the same play as Jubilee in Ghana. Paon 1X encountered good quality oil in Cretaceous turbidites thus extending the Jubilee play and de risking the basin in Côte d'Ivoire. Two follow up wells in 2013 were disappointing. The Calao 1X exploration well encountered only gas and condensate shows and a down dip appraisal of Paon was water bearing. The field's hydrocarbon column is also considered to be gas rich therefore we expect further liquids would need to be proved in order to sustain a commercial development. Two subsequent appraisals were more encouraging and a further appraisal well is planned for 2016. A cluster development had been identified as the most likely option for commercial development but sufficient liquids need to be proved.
