Well known for its rapidly growing energy demand, China remains the largest oil producer in South East Asia by some margin, accounting for more than half of the output in the South East Asian region. Following a period of strong growth in recent years, output abruptly started to decline from the start of 2016. A policy shift to focus on higher value production has led to investment cut-backs at mature producing fields.
