Shell discovered oil at Sierras Blancas in 2013. It has since extended the concession into one of the first exploitation licences under the reformed hydrocarbon law. After Loma Campana, it is one of the few major projects in the country where development is focused on Vaca Muerta shale. Exploration has focused on testing and appraising the potential of Vaca Muerta. The blocks have been studied through 3D seismic. Additional gas potential may be found in the deeper Lajas tight gas formation, however, the operator does not have further exploration plans to date. Current exploration is focused on identifying the most productive layers of the thick Vaca Muerta formation.
