The El Mansoura contract area lies onshore, in the heart of the gas-prone Nile Delta, around 100 kilometres north of Cairo. Since the area was licensed in 1998, Merlon, and subsequently Melrose (now Petroceltic), discovered a string of gas fields and two oil fields. West Khilala and West Dikirnis are the largest fields discovered to date. Gas production began in 2002, underpinned initially by South Batra and later West Khilala and West Dikirnis. Oil production from El Tamad began in 2006 and the largest oil producer, West Dikirnis, came onstream in 2007. In 2009, production was supplemented when four new fields were brought onstream using existing facilities and infrastructure.
