Hassi Messaoud is the largest oil field in Algeria. Operated by Sonatrach, the field has underpinned the country's oil production for over six decades. The field was discovered in 1956, approximately 650 kilometres southeast of Algiers, in the Oued Mya Basin. Oil production began in 1958 and ramped up to a plateau of 500 kb/d by 1970.
