KMK Munai operates the Kokzhide Kumsai and Mortuk oil fields in the Precaspian basin. It is controlled by state owned Chinese companies. In 2013 a majority stake was acquired by CNPC AktobeMunaiGas the largest operator in Kazakhstan's Aktobe region.The three fields were discovered in the Soviet era but were not developed until the 1990s.
