The Los Angeles Basin, located in Southern California, is one of the most prolific oil producing areas in the United States. Oil seeps were first discovered in the La Brea Tar Pits in 1769 near Los Angeles. While the first commercial oil field was discovered in 1893, it was a series of large-scale oil field discoveries in the 1920s that made this basin one of the largest producing areas in the world.
