Report summaryThe Piper field started production in 1976 and was originally developed by Occidental Petroleum using a single steel platform. On 6 July 1988, a massive leakage of gas condensate exploded leading to a number of large oil fires. The resulting heat ruptured the riser of a gas pipeline from another installation producing a further massive explosion that engulfed the Piper 'Alpha' platform.
