Ratawi is a giant oil field in the southern province of Basra, about 15 kilometres west of the Rumaila field. It was discovered in 1950 by the Basra Petroleum Company. Iraq's South Oil Company (now Basra Oil Company) initiated the first stage of development and installed a production facility with 60,000 b/d capacity. Production started at the end of 2007. State-operated Basra Oil Company is undertaking development activity, but a large-scale development is unlikely to be sanctioned unless offered to a larger IOC.
