WPX Energy was formerly a wholly-owned subsidiary of Williams, and operated as the pipeline giant's exploration and production division. At the end of 2011, WPX became a separate, independent company. The company has a large position in the Rocky Mountains and a small remaining presence in the Appalachian Basin's Marcellus Shale. On 2 February 2015, the company announced it completed the sale of its acreage in northeast Pennsylvania to Southwestern Energy.
