WPX Energy was formerly a wholly-owned subsidiary of Williams, and operated as the pipeline giant's exploration and production division. At the end of 2011, WPX became a separate, independent company. The company has a large position in the Rocky Mountains and a presence in the Marcellus Shale. Within the Rocky Mountains, WPX operates in the Greater Green River, Piceance, Powder River, San Juan, and Williston basins.
