The Springs electrolytic smelter, Zinc Corporation of South Africa or Zincor, which is built on the site of the old Vogelstruisbult gold mine, was commissioned in 1969 to supply South Africa's zinc requirements, which are largely for galvanising. Initially of capacity 50kt/a slab zinc, based on using Southern African concentrates and SW African Waelz oxides, capacity was expanded and the residue treatment plant was commissioned in 1976.
