The Wood Mackenzie Future Facing Commodities Forum took place on 27 March and included sessions focused on battery material demand, investment in energy transition metals, the drive for greener metals that are key to building our electrified future.
2023 has delivered weaker margins for producers of most future facing commodities. Global monetary tightening has weighed on demand for metals and the pervasive supply chain disruptions of 2022 have dissipated, if not completely disappeared. The renewables and EV sectors, critical pieces of metals demand, have fared reasonably well, but are by no means immune from the global slowdown, and are facing other headwinds of their own. As we move into 2024, much uncertainty remains. Conflict, energy security and China’s economic prospects still stalk markets, and clarity around timing of a recovery remains elusive. Meanwhile miners face new levels of regulation and costs.
