What's in this year's report?
The past year has been a volatile one for the metallurgical coal markets, as disruptions rooted in the war in Ukraine as well as deep-seated economic concerns in China reverberated across the steel and steelmaking raw material markets.
This coming year will also see some more key developments, both as current trends continue to unfold and as new one start to take stride.
In this insight we draw on insight from our Coal Research Suite to
assess the outlook for the metallurgical coal markets for this year, focused on five topics:
- Met coal miners: are costs getting too high? Who will be investing?
- When will we see a recovery in Europe, and is it really that much of a positive for met coal?
- Indonesian cokemaking to hit the accelerator, how will this affect the seaborne merchant markets?
- Will the rise of Mongolian and Russian coking coal in China be sustained?
- How will Indian steelmakers capitalise on cheap Russian coal offers, and how long can it last?
