Off-grid energy access is maturing as a sector. According to a new report from Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables and energy access nonprofit Energy 4 Impact, nearly $1.7 billion in cumulative disclosed investment has been deployed into energy access markets through the end of 2018, and investment in pay-as-you-go home solar companies and other players is accelerating.

The research finds that total annual investment in the off-grid energy access sector surpassed $500 million in 2018. Strategic investors from the utility and energy space and beyond have formed over 30 partnerships and joint ventures with off-grid energy access companies. The report also finds that potential service offerings for new energy customers go beyond a basic electricity connection.
