Escalation of US sanctions on Turkish aluminium imports would devastate Turkish downstream sector

The Eti (or Seydisehir) smelter is a truly integrated operation, with captive mine, refinery and downstream facilities. On 10 February, President Donald Trump signed executive orders using the Section 232 mandate to apply a 25% tariff on steel and aluminium imported into the US, effectively cancelling exemptions and duty-free quotas on Canada, Mexico, EU, and other countries. These tariffs would go into effect on 12 March. In this Insight we explore the implications of the tariffs and note that there is uncertainty around what the final outcome from the policy will be.

President Trump has decided to remove all the exemptions to the Section 232 tariffs on steel imports that his administration introduced in 2018. The move which is due to go into effect on March 12 will affect US imports of galvanized sheet and potentially see its exports hit by retaliatory tariffs that may be introduced in the coming weeks and months.
