Pre-event workshop: An interactive Oxford-style debate - Maximising Africa's Energy empowerment
Monday 29th September | 10:30am - 11:30am
Wood Mackenzie will host an Oxford debate format interactive pre-event workshop to debate the motion ‘This house believes that Africa should prioritise its oil and gas endowment ahead of alternative energy sources’.
Key questions to be debated will include:
- Are hydrocarbons the most important solution to Africa’s energy needs?
- Should Africa prioritise meeting domestic energy demand ahead of exports?
- Should renewables be de-prioritised to maximise oil and gas supply?
- How relevant are Africa’s carbon emissions to its energy choices?
In line with the well-established Oxford debate format, the audience will be invited to vote on the motion before the start of the debate. Two debating teams on stage will then argue either “for” or “against” the motion, before the debaters engage with one another directly. Audience members will then have the opportunity to ask the debaters questions before the debaters provide their closing remarks.
At the end of the debate, the moderator will then ask the audience to vote again on the motion and will assess whether one of the debating teams has succeeded in winning the audience to their argument.
