Long seen as the lifeblood of the oil and gas industry, exploration now faces an existential crisis. Under intense scrutiny on both environmental and economic grounds, investment has plummeted.
So, is there still a case for exploration? The world is already short of advantaged barrels – those with the lowest costs and lowest carbon emissions. Exploration will still play a role, even if we see a faster-than-expected retreat from oil and gas under an accelerated energy transition scenario.
