Regulators in several states are asking utilities to procure non-wires alternatives (NWA) where those solutions are more cost-effective than traditional solutions like additional feeders and substation upgrades. As this is a relatively new approach, utility procurement teams, technology providers, and partners must typically:
- Solve a distribution problem like peak demand, power quality or aging infrastructure at a cost lower than what the utility would need to address it with traditional investment
- Provided not by the utility but by end users or third-party firms – though fully regulated utilities could, feasibly, develop their own NWA solutions
- Procured based on a desired outcome or service, not based on a specific technology approach
In this webinar, we will discuss:
- What Non Wires Alternatives are, its benefits and challenges
- Best practices when procuring NWA projects
- Examples of integrating NWAs into microgrid projects in the US
