Madrid Energy Transition Briefing 2022

The business case for hydrogen and wind power

Energy and natural resource markets are facing major uncertainties that will affect the global energy balance and inter-fuel dynamics for years to come. Global net zero plans mean a rapid increase for renewables, low-carbon fuels and emerging technologies. So, what are the decarbonisation opportunities and where is the financing? Join us as we take a look at the business case for both hydrogen and wind power.

During the briefing, Wood Mackenzie will discuss:

  • The challenges of decarbonisation in the energy transition
  • The landscape of new technologies for decarbonisation, focusing on hydrogen and wind power

New technologies for decarbonsation: what are the opportunities and where is the financing?

Panel 1: Fireside Chat | Defining a Robust Hydrogen Business Model to get Projects off the ground

WoodMac’s Senior Hydrogen Research Analyst will talk to a leading hydrogen developer and a global financial institution backing some of these projects. We will cover the following key project finance questions:

  • What makes a hydrogen project an investable project?
  • Which are the key offtaker profiles in the Iberian Peninsula?
  • Pricing arrangements, debt equity and commercial structures for getting low-carbon hydrogen projects off the ground.
  • How does the recent RepowerEU ambition to produce 10Mt and import 10Mt of hydrogen by 2030 affect project developers in the EU? Will this shift private capital?

Panel 2: Wind Industry Panel | Investing in new renewables capacity in the face of emerging Spanish market policy

WoodMac’s Global Power & Renewables Principal Analyst will lead a discussion with leading developers and a global project financing institution in the renewables investment space. We will address the following critical market questions:

  • Has the Spanish government’s market intervention of limiting wholesale power pricing impacted investment in new renewables projects?
  • Offshore wind power is imminent in the Canary Islands. Can floating wind arrays off the Iberian Peninsula compete with traditional onshore renewables technologies?
  • The operational wind power fleet possesses massive repowering potential in Spain but minimal investment has occurred. Why has there been no substantial effort for a repowering support policy?
  • Spain already possessed one of the most ambitious NECP 2030 plans and a robust C&I PPA market. Does the market see further upside following the launch of REPowerEU?
