Paawan Jain, Data Manager, Delhi

My role

Paawan Jain is Manager at Wood Mackenzie's office in Gurgaon, India. He leads the data process team and oversees various data management tasks and projects. He works extensively with data, research and exploration teams providing them support with regular and ad-hoc tasks that helps them feed data into WoodMac products like LENS.

He also has experience in Insurance and Banking sectors working on catastrophic modelling data. He holds a Master’s in actuarial science from Amity University and Bachelor’s in Statistics. He also did a specialization certification from IIM Rohtak in Data Analytics.

 

How did you get into a career in Data?

From my school days, I have always had a passion for numbers, which I pursued with my higher education in Statistics and Actuarial Sciences. I saw that there is a lot of need for data skills in the market. The capabilities to capture and analyze the data much more efficiently became the building blocks for my career in Data Analytics and being part of Wood Mackenzie.

Tell us about your past experience?

I started my career with AIR Worldwide (Verisk Analytics) as part of the business development and client services team, understanding catastrophe modelling tools and assisting clients with training, presentations and queries. I also used technical skills like SQL and VBA for automation and feeding data into the database. I also worked with EXL services as a consultant. I dealt with clients, gathering and understanding their requirements and creating Tableau dashboards providing insights.

 

Give an overview of your current role and what a typical day is like

I’m a Research Data Manager leading the data process team in the Gurgaon, India office. A typical day involves overseeing tasks and projects currently being handled by the team and making sure we are on top of it with respect to any issues raised. Every day we coordinate with data, research and exploration teams’ stakeholders, tou understand business requirements and provide bandwidth. I also keep myself updated with what is happening in the energy industry, as well as across Wood Mackenzie.

 

What do you enjoy most about working at WoodMac?

I really like its culture and people. Woodmac is great place to learn and interact with people across teams. The company has given me the flexibility to explore my interests while accomplishing the business goals of the company. WoodMac includes people from diverse cultures across all of its departments.

 

What do you want to achieve next in your career?

I want to apply my technical skills to the wider variety of data sources available with in WoodMac and provide insights aliged with my team’s and WoodMac’s goals. Enhancing my current technical skills as per industry demands would be one more step in this process.  WoodMac encourages training each week, aligned to our Personal Development Plans – so that will definitely prove to be helpful. Also, I will focus on enhancing my people, leadership and management skills with help from internal training provided by WoodMac along with any external resources supporting my career growth.

What roles have you had in the past and what did you learn from them?

Management roles helped me in enhancing my team handling, interpersonal and leadership skills. It gave me a platform to get more involved with senior leadership and be part of strategic decision making.
