Long-term insight into supply and demand drivers for the US$1billion global industry
Growing at nearly 4% per annum since 2015, the global BOPA (bi-oriented polyamide) market is worth US$1 billion. Global production in 2020 was 315 kt but the industry faces new uncertainties, with the global pandemic and sustainability concerns hitting consumption. What will be the key drivers over the next five years and what are the main themes in each region?
The Global BOPA Film Supply Demand report provides detailed statistical analysis and extensive commentary on BOPA film market trends including five-year forecasts, regional breakdowns and a focus on the end-use markets and technology trends.
Inside this report:
- Coronavirus: How have the major markets coped with the impact of the pandemic?

Sustainability is no longer on the backburner in Europe
Demand for BOPA film has decreased in Europe due to concerns over its environmental impact (it is harder to recycle than some other products, such as BOPP or BOPET).
Lockdowns in March and April to combat coronavirus led to a temporary surge in packaging consumption, but orders have slowed once more. A new tax of €0.80 per kilogram from next year poses a further short-term threat to BOPA film demand.
There’s still a place for BOPA in flexible packaging
Despite sustainability concerns, BOPA’s properties mean it is still widely used in some applications. The material has a more robust oxygen transmission rate than competing film types, and a competitive puncture resistance. This means that it’s difficult to replace in certain applications in the flexible packaging industry, such as packaging for ‘high-odour’ products (e.g. meats, cheese, fish) and pharmaceuticals.
Asian market still offering healthy growth
Sustainability concerns have not significantly hit the Asia region yet. As such, the Asian BOPA film market is still set to grow at a faster pace than any other region over the forecast period. South East Asian countries have seen the strongest growth in recent years, and healthy growth is expected in the major regional markets of Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and India.
