August US ethylene spot prices assessed at Mont Belvieu have averaged near 18.0 c/lb, increasing over 4.0 cts/lb from the July average. The US ethylene contract for July settled up 0.75 c/lb from June. August has yet to settle. Supply decreased in August compared to July. Unplanned outages at crackers, measured in lost nameplate capacity, were the largest in a single month since the events of Hurricane Harvey. This combined with cracker delays to provide the first month since March 2018 where Wood Mackenzie assessed the market did not require economic throttling to balance.
