Polyethylene markets performed below expectations in 1H, before showing improvement at the start of Q3. The packaging and non-durables sectors were healthy, but generally, the automotive, chemicals, manufacturing and retail sectors were soft. Inventory levels were down following outages, although the start-up of ExxonMobil’s 650kt polyethylene plant in Beaumont, Texas, in early July is set to increase domestic supplies and boost stock levels. Export volumes have surged by 30% in 1H 2019 compared to the same timespan in 2018. Producers have built up margins as higher polymer pricing was met with falling feedstock costs, as contract prices for delivered ethylene fell to a new historic low.
