Regional operating rates touched 91% in May. North American YTD May 2020 vs. 2019 domestic polyethylene consumption is currently up 2.3%. LLDPE/LDPE drove the increase in polyethylene consumption levels, thanks to the consumer non-durable and packaging sectors. May YTD demand levels for LLDPE and LDPE are up 8.1% and 7.8%, respectively. The United States polyethylene export market has remained strong through global consumption uncertainty with May YTD 2020 vs. 2019 levels up 20% as producers continue to clear excess material.
