Polyethylene demand continues to make strides to recovery late into Q3. While not quite up to 2018 levels, North American demand has increased month over month consecutively from June to August and is expected to stay above the 2018 average for the remainder of 2019. Tropical storm Imelda made its way through southeast Texas in the third week of the month causing major flooding in the region. Polyethylene production at ExxonMobil Beaumont was halted. The spot export prices for all grades of polyethylene continue in September at, or near, ten-year lows. These low export prices continue to support the low net-back flow of resin to the far east, mainly South East and South Asia. The floods in the gulf coast supported an increase of 3 cents per pound increase in polyethylene contract prices, with little impact due to drone attacks in Saudi Arabia.
