Cardinal River was a metallurgical coal mine in west central Alberta, which is operated by Teck Coal. The mine produced low sulphur, medium-to-high volatile bituminous coking coal for international steel making customers. Historically, Cardinal River was Teck's highest cost operation, but due to tough metallurgical coal market conditions in recent years, much effort was put into improving the mine's operations. In May 2019, Teck decided against investing in the regulator approved Mackenzie-Redcap extension that would have extended the mine to 2027. The mine closed in June 2020.
