The expanding trend of China's domestic marketable coal output was temporarily interrupted in 2020 when COVID-19 broke out. After the economy gradually recovered in 2021 and 2022, the demand rebounded correspondingly, driving production to rise again. We expect marketable coal production to hover at a high level in the near term and will substantially decline with diminishing coal demand amid decarbonisation in the longer term. Total cash cost rose significantly in 2021 and 2022, owing to higher labour costs, mining costs and royalties. Fundamental improvement on the weighted average C1 cash cost, in the long run, is facing many challenges, such as the tangled labour issue, the intelligent development and the shifting of China’s energy consumption structure.
