Since 17 September, coal throughput at Qinhuangdao port has fallen to less than 300 kt a day, from a 2018 daily average of 600 kt. While no official announcement has been made, market players are reporting throughput has been capped to reduce air pollution around China’s coal shipping centre. Rumours also suggest that Hebei provincial authority wants to move some of Qinhuangdao’s coal-loading business to nearby Caofeidian port. Read our inform to find out what the Qinhuangdao throughput cap could mean for China’s domestic coal market and its seaborne imports.
