Coal Company Report - Westmoreland Canadian coal mines
Report summary
In addition to the mines it operates in the US, Westmoreland Mining Holdings LLC, the new private company that emerged from Westmoreland Coal Company's 2019 bankruptcy, controls four thermal coal producing surface mines in Canada. Westmoreland runs two mine-mouth operations in Saskatchewan and one in Alberta, selling to power plants under long-term cost-protected contracts. In addition, Westmoreland operates one thermal coal exporting mine in Alberta, Coal Valley, which exports coal to customers predominately in Japan and South Korea. Two Alberta domestic mines operated by Westmoreland shutdown at the end of 2021 with the remaining operation shutting down by the end of 2022.
