Commodity Market Report
Coal markets - North America short-term outlook - November 2021
Report summary
The fall shoulder season combined with more coal production in the third quarter finally allowed utilities to add some much-needed tons to their stockpiles. However, demand is still outpacing supply, and utilities will draw down inventories throughout the winter. With customers willing to sign multi-year contracts, producers can hire more workers and grow production to take advantage of the robust market. For now, supply tightness has a firm grasp on the domestic US market and high prices prevail.
