Global thermal coal markets: 2020 in review
Report summary
We made it to the end of a year which many are relieved is finally coming to a close. This year, thermal coal markets were battered by the sudden drop in demand related to the outbreak. Coal producers struggled with government restrictions, strikes, and the ability to remain competitive; especially exporters, as governments looked inward to protect domestic supplies. However, by the end of the year the situation changed significantly with coal shortages developing in China’s domestic market that pushed seaborne prices to two-year highs. In this report, we take a look back on all the important events for global coal markets in 2020.
