India Coal December 2021 outlook to 2050
Report summary
Industrialisation, favorable demographics and urbanisation to anchor India as a key driver for thermal and metallurgical coal demand. Total power generation and crude steel production is expected to grow by 187% and 230%, respectively, by 2050. At COP26 summit, India has opted for “phasing down” rather than “phasing out” coal to control emissions. This means coal will remain in the country’s industrial demand mix. India’s thermal coal import share will be 27% of global seaborne market by 2050. Strong growth in BF-BOF dominated steel production to drive metallurgical coal import share to 43% of global seaborne trade by 2050.
